Docking Tips for Jet Ski Cancun Drivers
Although operating a jet ski is not complicated, there are a few things to keep in mind. This article is for you if this is your first time riding a jet ski or if you just want some tips.
Before You Start!
Before you drive a jet ski, there are a few things you’ll need.
- Life Jacket
- Riding shorts
- Water shoes
- Biodegradable sunscreen
- Sunglasses
How can a jet ski be launched from a floating ramp?
The floating ramps allow us to safely and comfortably carry our customers up and down.
Each launch is different, but in general, it is simple and safe. Our crew will assist in pushing the jet ski back enough to reach the water. You may turn on the jet ski and take off once it is in the water.
When our staff helps you out of the floating ramp, you must be careful of your surroundings and other boaters. You don't want to hit it with a pole or another boat.
It's simple to return the jet ski to the floating ramp. The key is to take it slowly and follow our staff's guidance! The good news is that you can simply slide back into the water and try again if you don't give it enough strength. You must find that sweet spot, which you will do with enough practice.

Jet Ski Controls and What They Do
The steering of a jet ski is controlled by handlebars.
The buttons and triggers that control the jet ski are located on the handlebar.

Jet Ski Forward, Neutral, Reverse
There are 3 types of jet ski transmissions.
- just forward
- forward, neutral and reverse
- Forward, neutral, reverse and brakes
Some jet skis do not have brakes or even reverse. Our jet skis only have forward motion; to stop, the engine must be turned off.
Attach The Lanyard to Yourself
The lanyard must be attached to you; the Sea-Doo lanyard contains a clip that can be connected to your life jacket.
The lanyard must be on you and attached to the jet ski's lanyard place. If you fall off, the lanyard acts as a safety switch, shutting down the engine.
How To Start a Jet Ski?
You must be in at least 4 feet of water before starting a jet ski.
1. To start the jet ski, press the start/stop button.
2. Place the lanyard onto the correct spot of the jet ski with the other end attached to you.
3. Hold the start/stop button down until the engine starts fully.
Hold down the start/stop button or remove the lanyard from the jet ski to turn off the engine.
Note: that all 4-stroke jet skis are fuel-injected and must not be started with gas. When starting your jet ski, avoid contacting the throttle lever. Unlike push-button start autos, you must hold the start/stop button in until the jet ski has fully started.
Jet Skis Will Move When You Start Them
Before you start your jet ski, make sure the area around it is clear, as it will almost certainly move.
Your jet ski will begin to go in whatever direction you are facing, which is usually forward.
The impeller rotates when the engine is running on personal watercraft with a direct drive. There is no true "neutral," therefore even if it is neutral, there will be some movement.
When getting started, keep the handlebars straight.
Jet skis are direct drive, so if you turn the handlebars in any way, they will move in that direction.
This implies that if you start your jet ski in neutral and then turn the handlebars to the right, the jet ski will progressively turn to the right. Remember this, especially around the pier, to avoid hitting anything.
If your jet ski doesn't have brakes, it will take off at idle speed in whatever gear you're in. So be ready to leave once it begins.
Jet Skis Need a Little Gas When Turning
When you come to a complete halt and try to spin the handlebars, the jet ski will not steer. To steer the jet ski, you must give it some gas.
People will entirely ease off the throttle in a panic situation, which is bad since you lose steering. To be able to turn and escape out of an emergency, you must give it gas.
In this situation, you'll find that certain manufacturers may even increase the RPMs to offer you steering. Unfortunately, this feature is not available on every jet ski, therefore it's best to do it yourself.
When idling, the jet ski will steer, but when not idling, it will need some gas. A jet ski will also not steer if the motor is turned off.
Driving a Jet Ski is not the same as driving a boat.
Jet skiing is simple if you know how to drive a boat.
However, there are a few factors to consider.
Because a jet ski has a direct drive system, the impeller spins when the engine is turned on. This means the jet ski can spin in a neutral position. Because jet skis are smaller and lighter, they must be maneuvered more easily around docks. In addition, as compared to other boats, backing up with jet drive is the polar opposite of what you may expect.
Practice! practice! practice!
Our biggest tip is that you practice driving your jet ski with us.
Find a calm area on the water to practice your control and maneuverability. Then observe how the jet ski reacts in various scenarios, such as speeding up, turning, and stopping.
With enough practice, you'll be riding your jet ski like a pro in no time.
